Gaining Ground
The mission of the Gaining Ground Program is to empower participants to attain social and economic self-sufficiency. Through a short-term monthly rental subsidy, employment counseling and services, and intensive life skills education, the Gaining Ground program assists participants in gaining self-determination as they return to the workforce. Our participants gain skills that will enable them to live and work independently in the community, as well as the ability to make informed choices to support them in achieving their personal goals.
Joshua entered the Gaining Ground program in the very early stages of recovery from alcoholism. He was suffering from severe depression and was reeling from a recent breakup. He had no income and few job prospects, and was also coping with the recent cancer diagnosis of a close family member. Joshua spent the first several months of his time in Gaining Ground focusing solely on managing his depression and maintaining his sobriety. After about 6 months, he found a job selling advertisements for a local publication. With a new job, stable housing, and the support of Gaining Ground staff, he began to put his life back together and head in an upward direction. In an effort to maintain financial stability, Joshua worked with his case manager on budgeting and was able to begin saving some money. After two years in the Gaining Ground program, Joshua’s income increased tremendously and he successfully graduated from the program. His depression has dramatically decreased, he maintains his sobriety, and continues to work in his full-time, salaried job (which also provides healthcare benefits!). Joshua now pays his full fair market rent on his own and is no longer in need of a rental subsidy.
