The Reach of Our Roof
Chicago House has long been known for permanent supportive housing. But not everyone who comes to our door needs that level of support, because stability does not look the same for every person.
Our work reflects that reality. We step in when someone is at risk of losing their home, help someone overcome the barriers to securing one, provide a place to stabilize while they work toward independence, and support those who are already housed as their needs change over time. Together, these interventions form a continuum of housing designed to meet people where they are and help them move toward greater health and independence.
This is how that looks under Chicago House's roof:
Preventing Loss: For someone facing an immediate financial crisis, our team provides short-term assistance to help prevent a temporary setback from becoming a major loss. While receiving support, individuals work with our housing and health staff to address the circumstances behind the crisis and identify a path toward longer term stability.
Opening Doors: For someone who is ready to move into housing but cannot afford the upfront costs, our team helps cover security deposits, first month's rent, moving expenses, and other costs that might otherwise prevent them from securing a home.
Finding Footing: For young people who need time and support to establish independence, our team provides transitional housing and rapid rehousing through programs like Housing Opportunities Mean Everything and Housing Opportunities for Youth, creating a stable place to build the resources and connections needed for the next steps ahead.
Staying Supported: For people who benefit from ongoing assistance, our team provides permanent supportive housing alongside services that help residents maintain their health, strengthen financial stability, and build greater independence.
Aging in Place: For older adults living with HIV, our team is developing new approaches to ensure that housing continues to support health, mobility, and independence as needs change over time.
That distinction matters. Housing stability does not look the same for everyone, and the support that makes someone successful today may not be what they need tomorrow. Our model allows us to meet people where they are and ensure that, wherever they are on their journey, there is room for them under our roof.
