Message from Michael Herman
Twenty years ago, I had the privilege of joining the Chicago House team. For the past seven years, it has been my great honor to serve as CEO of this extraordinary organization. Throughout my adult life, I have been committed to serving communities affected by poverty, homelessness, and the life-threatening impact of HIV/AIDS.
This work has always been deeply meaningful to me, and through Chicago House, I’ve had the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people facing daily challenges to survive. I’ve also had the honor of working alongside an incredible team whose dedication and resilience shine through every day—often against all odds. There truly is no team like the Chicago House team.
As I prepare for retirement, I offer my deepest gratitude to all who have given so generously of their time, talent, and treasure. Your unwavering support has been the lifeblood of Chicago House, empowering it to fulfill its mission with strength and compassion.
In this next chapter, I will be stepping away from Chicago for a couple of months to thoughtfully reorient my life toward a more contemplative and spiritual path—one that reconnects me with the divine creative presence that guides and sustains me. This time will include returning to the ballroom dance floor at the Gay Games in Valencia, biking the coast of Spain, and slowing down my pace. I will spend time deepening my relationships with friends and family who I dearly love and to embracing a more spontaneous, playful spirit—one devoted to discovering and savoring the beauty that surrounds us.
My commitment to Chicago House—and to the compassionate care of those confronting the dual challenges of HIV and homelessness—remains steadfast and unwavering. I will continue to call upon each of us to uplift and sustain this extraordinary work, ensuring that its mission endures and its impact continues to grow.
Throughout my years at Chicago House, I have often closed my messages with the words, “Be well.” That remains my enduring wish for each of you who has shared in this journey. Please know that you carry with you my lasting love, gratitude, and support.
Be well,
Michael Herman
