Moment #09: 1994 – Chicago House inducted into Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame

In 1994, after nine years spent serving Chicagoans living with and dying from HIV/AIDS, Chicago House was inducted into the Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame cites Chicago House’s flexibility in adapting to the changing needs of its residents as well as the quality and depth of care offered through a continuum of care that supported individuals from the time they were diagnosed through the end stages of their illness.

At the time of induction, Chicago House served over 100 individuals each year; with the opening of the Fred Woods Home (later home to the Family Support Program) on the horizon, the agency’s service capacity would soon expand to 150 individuals each year. For perspective, in 2019, Chicago House served over 3,000 individuals. The Hall of Fame also lauded Chicago House for being the only housing program in the city to cater to families in which a head of household was living with HIV/AIDS.
