A Run/Walk to Remember
"As a member of the AIDS Run/Walk committee and a walk participant, I found the experience heartwarming and encouraging,” said Makhaila Anderson, Medical Case Manager, who helped lead Team Chicago House to success. “It was amazing to have so many friends, family and even strangers donate to my fundraising page. I knew how the dollars coming in would help our clients at Chicago House and I feel so grateful to see and feel the support from so many people!
On Saturday, September 27th, Chicago House participated in the AIDS Run & Walk with pride, joining thousands of supporters in the fight against HIV. Throughout our history, Chicago House and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago have worked together to address the intersecting challenges of housing and HIV, ensuring that individuals living with the virus have access to stable homes and pathways to health.
This year, Team Chicago House included over 80 members, combining staff and community partners united in a shared mission. Our team raised an impressive $40,000, earning 3rd place overall among participating organizations. Brant Hewelt, Program Manager, led the way as our top fundraiser with $3,836, while Jay Kennedy, our friend from Sherwin-Williams, engaged the largest number of donors with 55 contributors supporting his campaign. Our team also included dedicated participants from Wintrust and Aon, who helped amplify our visibility and strengthen support for Chicago House.
The event was a celebration of community. From start to finish, participants cheered each other on and shared the spirit of hope that drives our work. The day highlighted how collective action can make a measurable difference in the lives of people impacted by HIV.
These combined efforts are part of a broader strategy to achieve the Getting to Zero Illinois plan, the state’s first comprehensive initiative to end the HIV epidemic. It focuses on reducing new HIV transmissions to zero by 2030 and ensuring that all people living with HIV are engaged in care. Chicago House and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago collaborate closely to advance this mission of improving health outcomes and keeping people connected to essential services. Every dollar raised, every donor engaged, and every step taken during the Run & Walk moves us closer to a future where HIV no longer stands in the way of living fully and confidently.
“My favorite part of this has been connecting with people in a way that is meaningful and community driven,” reflected Makhaila post-event. “None of us can accomplish all that we have done at Chicago House alone, it takes a team and I'm very proud of what our team has accomplished!"
